The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) is a leading chartered private university (2019 University Webometrics) accredited by Commission for University Education in Kenya. Like most other Universities, it started modestly as a graduate School of Theology known as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa (CHIEA in 1984. It was established by the regional ecclesiastical authority known as the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences of Eastern Africa (AMECEA) with membership comprising of Kenya, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Malawi, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. On 18 August 1985, CHIEA was formally opened by Pope John Paul II. With big dreams to grow and serve a broader market, the University later obtained a Letter of Interim Authority in 1989 and finally was granted a charter in 1992.
To-date, CUEA has a heritage of 35 solid years of offering education grounded on values as per the Catholic hallmark. We put a lot of emphasis on values and ethics as we endevour to build the next generation of ethically upright leaders who can serve our communities with commitment and excellence. Our vision is to be a world class University producing transformative leaders for Church and Society, and our mission is to promote excellence in research, teaching and community service by preparing morally upright leaders based on the intellectual tradition of the Catholic Church.
The University has six (6) faculties, (two) 2 institutes and one (1) Centre namely: Faculty of Theology – Founding faculty accredited by the Holy See (Vatican), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Center for Social Justice & Ethics, Institute of Canon Law, The Institute for Regional Integration and Development, a specialist inter-disciplinary graduate institute for research and training in regional integration and capacity building for African regional agencies. We offer extensive range courses at certificate, Diploma, Degree and Post graduate level in Law, Business, IT, Science, Health Sciences, Education, Theology, Arts and Social Sciences, Regional Integration, Justice and Peace and Canon Law. CUEA is also a training and examination centre for ACCA and KASNEB for CPA & CS courses which is a great value addition to students on board.
As a leading regional and international University, we have a rich diversity of over (thirty) 30 nationalities (staff and students) and 100+ programmes on offer. We enroll both Government-sponsored as well as Private Sponsored Students, and we offer a conducive learning environment in our two campuses – Lang’ata Main Campus and Eldoret Gaba Campus with intakes in January, May, and August. Our students benefit from the wide range of rich extra-curricula activities including clubs, spiritual movements, and sports with vibrant teams in rugby (CUEA Monks), football, Basketball, netball, Volleyball, and Handball. We also organise social events for students such as International students dinner, Fresher’s Dinner, Finalists Dinner, Cultural Week and Mr. and Miss CUEA where our students showcase their talents and have fun. Our students also get an opportunity to participate in key competitions - moot courts (law students), Kenya Model United Nations sessions, sports, locally and internationally. We support needy students through our scholarship -Cardinal Otunga Scholarship as well as through our partners. The University also partners with industry to offer students with insights and skills for the job market as well as get internships. Part of the mental preparation we give our students is to ensure that they observe a strict dress-code that is decent and for the workplace. We pride ourselves of producing innovative and marketable graduates who form a large alumni base (over 30,000) spread across Africa and indeed the world making a political and socio-economic contribution.
Our facilities are top-notch. We have a state of the art Learning Resource Centre that hosts the CUEA’s Bishop McCauley Memorial Library, and an 800 seater auditorium has been recognized as one of the greenest buildings in Africa. It also comes with high speed internet connectivity and enormous electronic and physical resources. Our library has won Maktaba awards (as the best library in Kenya) for many years – 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and even 2018. We also have a fully-fledged publishing house - CUEA press, which offers publishing services to the University and other external authors.
CUEA has recently partnered with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd, a leading Chinese global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices. With this partnership, CUEA is now a Huawei Authorized Information and Network Academy (HAINA offering technical and practical ICT training to our students through the Huawei authorized global training curriculum and tools. This partnership will see students especially those studying Computer Science acquire global practical skills for the industry with the capacity to work anywhere in the world.
We warmly welcome all prospective students to visit us in our campuses, and we shall be happy to guide them into a study programe that meet their career aspirations. Schools are also welcome for Campus tours of the University Langata Main Campus to have a feel of what we have to offer. We organize a rigorous orientation programme for our new students to ensure that they quickly find their bearing and settle down to learn. The orientation program also includes the parents and guardians to give them an opportunity to engage and journey along with their sons and daughters.
